The computer hardware industry is a very competitive arena.
The pressure on manufacturers to keep ahead of competitors
with new generations of components, means that they are
rushed on to the shelves before a lot of testing
can be done.
The optimisations are done, and can continue
for quite some time after a product has been released. These
improvements are then released by the manufacturers as driver
updates.
These updates can improve how your product
operates e.g. stability, speed, features. As these updates
are provided freely on the manufacturer's websites, it makes
sense to make sure you are up to date.
In the image above you can see the version
of the driver. It's then just a matter of checking it against
the version on the manufacturers site and if the number there
is higher then it is a newer version. e.g. 8.1.8.7 is newer
than 8.1.8.5.
